Tissue Regeneration

I came across an interesting article that talks about potential use of inhibitors to accelerate tissue repair. I found this topic interesting because I myself have worn and torn the tissue in my knee due to soccer. It is a hard place for tissue repair, so the tissue never repairs to its fully best. It has been six years already and my knee still hurts most of the time.

This article talks about a new approach to repair tissue, and I wonder if it could potentially be used on people with knees like mine. The study was done on mouse models and used the enzyme 15-PGDH, which was found to degrade prostaglandin PGE2. Prostaglandin PGE2 is "a lipid signaling molecule that supports expansion of several types of tissue stem cells". In other words, this molecule helps in the growth of tissue, but it is degraded by the enzyme 15-PGDH. The approach of the experiment was to inhibit the enzyme 15-PGDH, so that it will in turn not degrade PGE2 and tissue could regenerate.

Mice with 15-PGDH knockdown were used as well as wild type mice with treated inhibitor for enzyme 15-PGDH. The inhibitor designed was called SW033291, which had the same functions as prostaglandin PGE2. It was found that both actually responded very well to tissue damage, specifically in bone marrow, colon, and liver. It was a small study, but I think it would be used to expand more on the knowledge of tissue repair.

  1. That's pretty great, since it is made for material such as bone marrow and liver, it already as some applications for the future. This could not only be useful for those such as yourself who have felt damage from an injury but for others who have faced the damage of time. Those with degrading bodies may be able to be assisted with this as their joints and tissues become more painful to deal with. Also considering bone marrow which is the source of many blood cells, we can assume this may be able to assist with immune systems that may be not as strong as a healthy persons as well.
